We are located in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, and are America’s leading research center for genealogists of every skill level. Visitors have access to millions of documents, manuscripts, records, books, microfilms, photographs, artifacts, electronic resources, and other items that preserve and reveal our nation’s history. NEHGS genealogists, archivists, and librarians are available to assist patrons with their research inquiries and provide orientations to the library collections.

Safety Protocols for Onsite Visits

Onsite visitation is by confirmed appointment only. All onsite visitors are required to wear a covering over their nose and mouth at all times and maintain physical distancing of at least six feet from other people. All staff will be wearing face coverings; hand sanitizer will be readily available.  Throughout the day, our staff will be disinfecting surfaces regularly between use.   All visitors will be required to leave the building between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to allow the staff to clean the building and take their lunch breaks. Visitors are not permitted to eat in the building. Visitors will be assigned a single workstation to use for the duration of their visit. Visitors will have open stack access to research materials on the floor to which they have been are assigned. A member of our staff will retrieve materials located on any other floor.

Admission to the Research Center is free for NEHGS members. Non-members are always welcome and may purchase a day pass for $20. Admission is $10 on Tuesdays.

Using Manuscript and rare book collections

Access to Manuscript and Rare Book Collections is available to NEHGS members, as well as visiting scholars who have made arrangements with the library and received authorization in advance. These collections may be searched through our library catalog. If you would like to request items ahead of time and have them prepared for your visit, please contact

Photocopying and Image Saving

Photocopies and printouts (from computer and microfilm printers) cost 25 cents per page, except library catalog printouts, which are free. Copies from the photocopiers and microfilm scanners may also be saved to flash drives at no charge. Flash drives are available for purchase at the library.

Group Visits

Book your group visit today!

NEHGS welcomes visits by groups from genealogical societies, historical societies, schools, churches, and other organizations. Our staff can provide an orientation and tour of the library, as well as customized presentations about our resources, website, collections, or other special topics as needed. Please provide at least one month’s notice before bringing a group of ten people or more to the library. Group discounts may be available. Availability for group visits on certain days may be limited due to special events at the NEHGS library.
